Principles of Diabetes Surgery (Metabolic Surgery)

It is a well documented fact that Morbid Obesity is associated with major components of the metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and Type 2 Diabetes mellitus. All these diseases constitute cardiovascular risk factors that directly promote the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and myocardial and cerebral infarction are its unfortunate endpoints. Other than that, dyslipidemia leads to steatohepatitis, a chronic liver disease, which is likely to result in liver cirrhosis.

Metabolic Surgery offers an opportunity for patients combating these ailments, as it leads to the full remission of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Moreover, it mitigates steatohepatitis and prevents cirrhosis.

In most cases, following an operation, patients with Type 2 Diabetes do not require a further insulin therapy, regardless of the preceding Insulin intake. In some patients, 300 IE Insulin is reduced to zero. The improvement of dyslipidemia occurs within 1 year after operation; it is, moreover, paired with weight loss and shows a sustained effect. Concerning the type of procedure, we offer custom surgery: from Sleeve gastrectomy and RYGB, LTB, SADI, DIOS, SASI, LIT to Duodenal switch.
